This is not surprising, since the Pew Hispanic Center tells us that the metropolitan area with the largest Hispanic population in the U.S. However, some of the world’s largest celebrations of this holiday happen in the United States with the largest occurring annually in Los Angeles, California. While commonly confused as such, Mexico’s Independence Day is on September 16th.Ĭinco de Mayo is remembered fondly in Mexico culture.

Another important fact to know about this day: Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexico’s Independence Day. The victory was unexpected because the French outnumbered the Mexican army and had a larger arsenal of weapons. Historically, Cinco de Mayo marks the anniversary of the battle of Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, when Mexican forces defeated the French’s attempts to conquer Mexico. Today we celebrate…what exactly? Cinco de Mayo is certainly a celebration, but how many of us know for what?
